Robert Hamrdla presents The Berlin Memorial: How Germany Remembers the Holocaust

5:00 p.m. Reception  |  6:00 p.m. Presentation

Join us as we hear from Stanford Professor Robert Hamrdla, a world traveler and expert in German studies. In addition to teaching at Stanford University for more than three decades, Hamrdla has traveled and even led tours to Europe for the past 50 years, taking thousands of Stanford students and alumni on educational journeys. With a primary focus on Germany and Central Europe, he has taken his groups to the various museums and memorials pertaining to World War II.

Hamrdla will discuss the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which consists of over 2,700 concrete slabs taking up nearly five acres of land in the heart of Berlin. Germany erected the memorial, which cost €25 million to build, as a place of living memory so that the horrors of the Holocaust, and Germany’s role in it, would not be forgotten.

Hamrdla will also talk about the memorial’s role in German politics today, as well as the praise and criticism it has received internally and internationally.
