Lagniappe Lecture: Tom Culbert presents "Forgotten Warriors: African American GIs in Liberia 1942-1945"
H. Mortimer Favrot Orientation Center

Join author Tom Culbert as he shares the true, but little-known, story of the US Army's deployment of African American troops—including engineers, infantry soldiers, a coastal artillery unit, and a medical hospital—to Liberia, West Africa in May 1942. Mr. Culbert was stationed in Africa as an Air Force Pilot and military attache for five years.

The historical materials in Mr. Culbert's presentation were gathered using official US Army archived textual records, dozens of Army Signal Corps photographs, personal papers and photographs, contact with alumni groups, the Firestone Rubber Plantation archives, and the Rare Book and Manuscript Collection at Cornell University.
