Between the St. Lo Breakout and the closing of the Falaise Pocket, the 30th Infantry Division—a National Guard unit—stopped Hitler's massive Unternehmen Luettich counterattack. The division's heroic action in holding their ground prevented the Germans from cutting the supply lines of Patton's Third Army and allowed General Bradley to spring the trap at Falaise.
