Join us in conversation with Anthony Tucker-Jones, author of Hitler’s Winter: The German Battle of the Bulge, which draws on new research to provide a fresh perspective on one of the most famous battles of World War II, and Churchill Cold War Warrior: Winston Churchill and the Iron Curtain, which explores of the influence of the end of World War II on the Cold War.

About Hitler’s Winter: The German Battle of the Bulge

The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive in the West. Launched in the depths of winter to neutralize the overwhelming Allied air superiority, three German armies attacked through the Ardennes, the weakest part of the American lines, with the aim of splitting the Allied armies and seizing the vital port of Antwerp, Belgium, within a week. The desperate battle became a race against time and the elements that the Germans would eventually lose. But Hitler's dramatic counterattack did succeed in catching the Allies off guard in what became the largest and bloodiest battle fought by US forces during the war.

In Hitler's Winter, Anthony Tucker-Jones tells the story of the battle from the German point of view, from the experiences of the infantrymen and panzer crews fighting on the ground in the Ardennes to the operational decisions of senior commanders such as SS-Oberst-Gruppenführer Josef "Sepp" Dietrich and General Hasso von Manteuffel that would decide the fate of the offensive.

About Churchill Cold War Warrior: Winston Churchill and the Iron Curtain

As the war in Europe began to draw to a close in early 1945, Winston Churchill harbored deep concerns over the shifting alliances that would shape postwar Europe. Yet earlier in 1944, he had inadvertently sowed the seeds for the Cold War by granting Joseph Stalin preemptive control of Eastern Europe. Ousted as prime minister in July 1945, Churchill spent years watching Britain's powers drastically wane as it weathered the East-West confrontation over Berlin and warning of the Soviet Union's expanding influence and partitioning of Europe, most famously in his 1946 “Iron Curtain” speech.

In Churchill Cold War Warrior, Tucker-Jones reassesses Churchill’s neglected postwar career, exploring his strategies, decisions, and influence from the beginning of the end of World War II through his second stint as prime minister in the 1950s, as he took back the reins to confront an unravelling British Empire and escalating Cold War.
