Robert Ticknor presents Brigadier General Louis Joseph Fortier

Join us to us hear Robert Ticknor of The Historic New Orleans Collection discuss Brigadier General Louis Joseph Fortier, a Gretna, Louisiana, native who served many roles in World War II. He was a military attaché in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, where he witnessed the beginning of World War II in the Balkans, participated in "behind the scenes" activities during the 1941 Serbian coup d'état, and engaged in a diplomatic mission that helped stop the bombing of Belgrade. In 1942, he organized a joint intelligence committee serving as an aide-de-camp to King George II of Greece and French General Henri Honoré Giraud. Fortier commanded the 94th Infantry Division and was placed in command of a special Franco-American task force to contain the Germans in Lorient. In 1945, Fortier was among the first American soldiers to cross the Rhine. At the end of the war, Fortier joined the military staff committee of the United Nations, and served as assistant director in the Central Intelligence Group, the forerunner of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
