Celebrating the End of the War
US Freedom Pavilion: The Boeing Center

On August 14, 1945, word spread here in the United States (it was already August 15 across the International Dateline in Japan) that Japan had surrendered and the fighting was over. Although the surrender documents were not officially signed until September 2, 1945, spontaneous celebrations broke out in New Orleans and across the United States as American learned the long years of fighting were over and the United States was victorious.

Beth Arroyo Utterback, the executive vice president and chief operating officer of WYES-TV, will recall her father’s memories of the happy street parade, and speak on the iconic Times-Picayune photo of the celebration. She will also recognize others who were in the photo and their descendants.
