Lagniappe Lecture: Kimberly Tony Korol-Evans presents "Operation Manna/Chowhound"
H. Mortimer Favrot Orientation Center

From late April to early May of 1945, a joint mission between the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Corps (AAC) dropped thousands of pounds of food over a destitute Holland, where Dutch civilians were starving to death following what was known as the "hunger winter". The lack of food became so dangerously low that the German occupiers agreed to let the Allied planes drop food parcels rather than their usual loads of bombs, allowing people to survive until the liberation of Holland. While in the United States these missions are largely unknown, the Dutch still recognize the importance of these food drops for the survival of many citizens. As the 70th anniversary of Operation Chowhound approaches, Dr. Kimberly Tony Korol-Evans will discuss the humanitarian mission as well as the continuing relationship between the Dutch people and the men who flew these missions utilizing video, first-person accounts, and newspaper sources.
